The Basic History of Heaton Moor, Stockport A Lovely Town

Heaton Moor is an English suburb located in Stockport. Heaton Mersey is one of four Heatons within the boundaries of Lancashire's historic county. Heaton Moor's Victorian houses were built between 1860 and 1892 in a tree-lined street pattern that followed the fields patterns of an old agricultural economy.

Heaton Moor in Stockport is mostly located within Heaton’s North ward. It was originally part of the township Heaton Norris within the Salford 100 of Lancashire. Heaton Norris Local Board managed it following the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, as part Stockport Poor Law Union. Heaton Moor became part of Heaton Norris in 1913.

Heaton Moor is mostly flat land with no streams or rivers. As would be expected of land that was once peat moorland, the soils are black and fertile. Heaton Moor only has two public parks, Heaton Moor Park & Thornfield Park. It does have a few tree-lined road, but the distance between the building lines and the street gives it the appearance of being more spacious and Victorian in style.

Heaton Moor in Heaton Norris was farmland before the railway opened. This land was used by pigs as well cattle and cereal. Heaton Norris used to be part of Manchester barony belonging to the Grelley clan, but from 1162 until 1180 it was owned by William le Norreys. Heaton Norris had been a part of Manchester since the early 13th-century. This sub manor included the Four Heatons. In 1322 a total of 32 dwellings were found, suggesting that there was a 150-person population. Ten of the freeholders in the escheated estate had the privilege to graze the common pasture, and cut wood. Shaw Farm or Shaw Fold Farm are examples of pre-railroad dwellings. As is the Heaton Moor Road (formerly Shaw Road), Shaw Fold Lane (formerly Pin Fold Lane), Green Lane and Heaton Moor Road. Parsonage Road (and Cranbourne Avenue) follow the old tracks.

Heaton Chapel was a turning moment in the development. Land was purchased and streets were planned. The houses, new buildings and gardens along Heaton Moor Road reflected a grandiose style. They have large stone gates and are set far back from Heaton Moor Road. The same characteristics are found in the new residential road such as Broomfield Road.

The construction and filling of the buildings continued through to the Edwardian Period. There was a variety of sporting facilities such as golf, crown green bowling or tennis. Heaton Moor Road has a significant terrace of shops that have glass and cast iron awnings. Alfred Darbyshire's Reform Club was constructed in 1886.
